Garden Boxes

Last year after we had gotten most of the inside stuff straightened out and updated a bit, we headed to the front yard. Then we did a little garden area in the side yard to camouflage the poor drainage that caused a good chunk of our grass there to look pretty rough. After all that outdoor work we were pretty tired, it was time for Jeff's busiest time at work, so we decided to put the backyard off until this year. The first thing we wanted to do in the back, which is a completely blank canvas, was put in garden boxes. Jeff's parents have had success in their garden boxes the last couple of years, so we are putting their model to work in our yard. Everything is in raised beds, and it's all organic. A couple of weeks ago we got to work. The first thing was for Jeff and his dad to build the boxes. We loaded them with dirt, and very fertile mixture. We've put in a watering systems, or the pipes at least. We have one box that we are currently using as a greenhouse to start seeds. That box has a watering system attached, which we'll perfect a little once the box is opened. We put down some stepping stones all around so we would have super muddy areas to walk. We've actually gotten further along this afternoon (after these pictures were taken), and have just part of the walkway to the boxes to go. There's a couple of more boxes going in this year-a compost box and an smaller asparagus box. We are waiting for the grass to start to green where those boxes will go, so we can kill the grass first....we don't want Bermuda grass to invade our boxes. The asparagus box will be smaller. The crowns are ordered. I'm a bit worried that they won't do as well since the proper time to plant asparagus is late February to late March, but we shall see.
I planted the little peat pots to start some stuff last week, and I've already got some green things popping up. YAY!
Who knows what the rest of the yard will have in store for it. Some of it will have to wait at least another year, like the line of Cypress trees in the back. Those boogers are expensive...and so is the little sprout I'm carrying around these days, which of course take precedence.

Magic dirt

So steamy in our box it fogged up my lens. We have a thermometer in there to let us know if it's getting too hot, and we need to open the ends.
